Terraria Master Mode Tips

Intermediate 12 min — Strategies and boss tips for surviving Master Mode.

What Changes in Master Mode

Master Mode makes enemies deal triple damage (compared to Normal) and have 50% more health than Expert. You keep all Expert Mode mechanics (double accessories, expert drops) and gain:

  • Master Mode exclusive pet drops from every boss
  • Exclusive mount from Duke Fishron
  • Exclusive light pet from Moon Lord
  • Every hit is potentially lethal — even basic enemies can two-shot you early

Early Game Survival

  • Mine for ore immediately — gold/platinum armor is your priority
  • Build proper houses ASAP for NPC healing/shop access
  • Use rope and platforms liberally — mobility saves lives
  • Carry recall potions at all times
  • Don't explore the Jungle or Dungeon early — enemies hit extremely hard
  • Use campfires and heart lanterns everywhere you go

Arena Building is Mandatory

Every boss fight needs a dedicated arena:

  • Multiple layers of wooden platforms (5-7 blocks apart)
  • Campfires and Heart Lanterns placed throughout
  • Sunflower at the base (happy buff)
  • Honey pools (regeneration buff)
  • Nurse nearby with housing for emergency healing (build a box nearby)

Recommended Boss Order

  • King Slime (safe, good drops)
  • Eye of Cthulhu (at night, after 200 HP)
  • Brain of Cthulhu / Eater of Worlds
  • Queen Bee (farm multiple times for Bee Gun)
  • Skeletron
  • Wall of Flesh (long hell bridge is essential)

Hardmode Transition

  • Smash Demon/Crimson Altars for new ores (3 of each type minimum)
  • The evil biome spreads FAST — dig isolation trenches early
  • Get Wings immediately — Angel/Demon wings or Leaf Wings from Witch Doctor
  • Farm Souls of Light/Night for key mimics

Potions Are Mandatory

You cannot skip potions in Master Mode:

  • Ironskin (+8 defense)
  • Endurance (-10% damage taken)
  • Lifeforce (+20% max HP)
  • Regeneration (HP regen)
  • Wrath/Rage (damage boost)
  • Swiftness (movement speed)
  • Ammo Reservation (for ranged)
  • Magic Power + Mana Regeneration (for mage)

Money Farm Strategies

  • Blood Moon fishing — sells for high prices
  • Pumpkin Moon/Frost Moon — farm with arena
  • Pirate Invasion — Lucky Coin + Slime Staff combo
  • Simply selling boss drops adds up quickly
