Beginner 10 min — Melee, Ranged, Mage, Summoner: strengths, weaknesses, and gear progression.
Terraria has four main classes, defined by the armor bonus and weapon type you use. While you can mix weapons early on, by Hardmode you'll want to commit to a class for the armor bonuses. Here's how they compare.
Strengths: Highest defense, close-range devastation, great survivability.
Weaknesses: Limited range (until endgame), harder to dodge while attacking.
Best for: Players who want to tank hits and deal consistent damage. Melee gets much stronger in late game with projectile swords (Terra Blade, Zenith).
Strengths: Consistent DPS at safe distances, good ammo variety, versatile.
Weaknesses: Ammo management, moderate defense.
Best for: Players who like staying back and dealing reliable damage. Ranged is the most consistent class across all game stages.
Strengths: Highest burst damage, diverse weapon effects, fun playstyle.
Weaknesses: Mana management, lowest defense, squishy.
Best for: Players who want flashy weapons and high damage while dodging constantly. Mage requires more skill but is extremely rewarding.
Strengths: Automated damage (minions fight for you), frees you to dodge.
Weaknesses: Lowest personal defense, relies on minion AI, limited early game.
Best for: Players who want to focus on dodging while minions deal damage. Summoner is weak early but dominant endgame with Terraprisma.
