Calamity FAQ — Quick Answers to Common Questions

Beginner 6 min — Marked for Death, the Celestial Onion, Catalyst items, and other things players search for mid-fight.

What does Marked for Death do?

Marked for Death is a debuff that makes the target take 1.1x damage from all sources. Marked enemies glow with a bright purple tint so you can see it's active.

  • Applied at 100% chance by eight weapons, including the Anti-materiel Rifle (5s), Auralis (7s), Eye of Magnus (8s), Lunic Eye (8s), Tyranny's End (5s), Animosity (3s), Temporal Umbrella (3s), and the Caustic Staff (0.5s with 4+ minions)
  • In multiplayer, one player keeping the mark up is a free 10% team-wide damage boost
  • Catch: many endgame bosses are immune — including the Devourer of Gods, Polterghast, and the Exo Mechs — so don't build your endgame strategy around it

What does the Celestial Onion do — and why won't it drop?

The Celestial Onion is a one-time consumable from Moon Lord that permanently adds an accessory slot — a sixth in Normal, or a seventh in Expert once you've also consumed a Demon Heart.

If it's not dropping, it's almost certainly one of these:

  • You're in Master Mode. It does not drop there at all — Master already grants extra slots, so it would do nothing
  • You already ate one. It's once per character; a second use just shows a warning message
  • In Normal and Expert it's a guaranteed (100%) drop, so there's no RNG to blame

How do schematics and decryption work?

Short version: find Encrypted Schematics in the five Bio-center Labs (Sunken Sea, Planetoid, Jungle, Underworld, Ice), build the Codebreaker, and decrypt them in order with Draedon Power Cells — each one unlocks the component that decrypts the next. The full chain, component recipes, and Power Cell costs are in our dedicated Codebreaker & Schematics guide.

What is the Astral Communicator? (Catalyst)

The Astral Communicator comes from the Catalyst addon, not base Calamity. It's dropped by the Ascended Astral Slime and summons Astrageldon, the mod's superboss.

  • Use it on the surface of the Astral Infection biome — it doesn't work underground
  • Right-click summons phase 1; left-click summons phase 2 (once phase 1 is beaten)
  • It isn't consumed on use
  • Warning: if you defeat Moon Lord before beating Astrageldon, the Communicator breaks and the fight is locked out for that world — do it pre-Moon Lord

How do I get Metanova Bars? (Catalyst)

Metanova is gated behind Astrageldon:

  1. Defeat Astrageldon (see above)
  2. Metanova Ore then generates in galaxy-shaped veins in the deeper caverns of the Astral Infection
  3. Craft bars at an Ancient Manipulator: 8 Metanova Ore + 5 Stardust per bar

What's the Shattered Community max level?

Level 25 — it levels from damage dealt while Rage Mode is active (+1% Rage damage per level, ~130 million damage total to cap). How to get it, the full stat list, and fast-leveling routes are in the Shattered Community guide.

What is a Viperfish?

An enemy in the upper layer of the Abyss, alongside Bloatfish and Box Jellyfish. They're a routine hazard on early dives and a source of basic Abyss materials. If you're heading down, read the Abyss biome guide first — the lower layers are a different world.
